Everywhere you look in Tokyo you will find an award-winning restaurant. The city has 204 restaurants that have been awarded between 1 and 3 Michelin stars.
And many others have won awards from other esteemed establishments. There are even two Michelin starred sushi restaurants in Tokyo under a subway overpass…
If you are only in Tokyo for 7-14 days, where do you go to eat? How do you narrow that list down? How do you know which Michelin star restaurants in Tokyo are worth the money?
Here are two must-visit 3 Michelin star restaurants in Tokyo.
Sukiyabashi Jiro Ginza (すきやばし次郎 銀座)
Chef Jiro Ono
When you are talking about restaurants in Tokyo that have 3 Michelin stars, Sukiyabashi Jiro Ginza brings up a lot of mixed feelings.
Many people are not aware of this, but to be able to hold any number of Michelin stars, your restaurant must be open to the public and it must be possible for them to book a seat if they wish.
There are a few restaurants in Tokyo that got so popular after being awarded three Michelin stars that they closed their doors to the public and only took applications for seats.
When they did this, Michelin stripped them of their stars.
Sukiyabashi Jiro Ginza was one of these restaurants.
So, while this restaurant technically does not have any Michelin stars, it previously has three and is considered one of the best restaurants in Tokyo.
This was the restaurant that the Japanese Prime Minister took President Obama to when he visited Tokyo.
The restaurant is famous for its Omakase Course – a 20 piece meal that costs just over 30,000 yen.
There is space to feed 10 people at a time in this restaurant and the chef will cook your food to order right in front of you.
If you are able to get a reservation at this restaurant, then you should be aware that while there is no dress code, it is recommended that men wear a jacket, open shoes are avoided, and women do not wear perfume because of the open flames used by the chefs while cooking.
If you really want to get into this restaurant, then your best option is to book into one of the best hotels in Tokyo, this will help your application but won’t guarantee you a stop at the sushi bar.

Sukiyabashi Jiro Roppongi (すきやばし次郎 六本木)
Outside The Restaurant And Sushi
This is a 2 Michelin star sushi restaurant that can be found under a subway overpass. You can find a full list of Michelin 2 star restaurants in Tokyo here.
You might be thinking that the two restaurants on this list have very similar names – there is a reason for that.
Sukiyabashi Jiro Roppongi is run by the son of Chef Jiro Ono, who runs the restaurant we talked about above. The two restaurants are part of the same family of sushi bars.
So, if you are unable to get a seat at the father’s restaurant, then you should seriously consider visiting the son.
Jiro Roppongi is open to public booking and has two Michelin stars to its name.
Chef Takashi Ono runs this restaurant and making heavenly sushi clearly runs in the family.
He trained under his father for many years and was even featured in the famous Jiro Dreams of Sushi documentary.
We recommend ordering the omakase set – a pre-selected 14 plate meal that offers some of the finest seasonal sushi in the city.
The fish is typically served on tart sushi rice. This is a style of sushi rice that has become a signature of the Jiro family and their restaurants.
Salmon Roe and Tiger Prawn are two of the most popular dishes at Sukiyabashi Jiro Roppongi.
